Tips for Choosing Artwork

Have you finished designing your dream home? Moved to a new work environment? Want to add character and atmosphere to a space? You’ve bought furniture, hung lighting, and you’re still wondering what’s missing to complete the design? It seems like you need some artwork!

Creating art brings a unique atmosphere to any space and is an integral part of the final design. The living room is the social area in the house and the heart of family gatherings. Most of the free time we spend at home, we spend in the living room, so choosing an original painting or high-quality print can give your living room a beautiful, pleasant, and well-designed look. It’s not just a central space; the living room has many functions. On the one hand, we want it to be representative when guests come over, and on the other hand, we want it to match the taste and style of all the house’s inhabitants and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Personal Taste:

It’s essential that you love the artwork you choose. The painting you select should reflect your personality and taste, creating a presence that makes you feel comfortable and connected every time you look at it. Connect with the style, colors, and content of the artwork.

Matching the Space Design:

The artwork can either complement the overall look and style of the space or be an element that breaks the design. For example, if your living room is designed in shades of white, gray, and black, a very colorful painting can be the perfect breaking element your living room needs. On the other hand, if your living room has bold color tones, it’s recommended that the painting includes at least one or two of those colors to complement the existing look of the space. Consider also matching the artwork to the colors of the accessories in the room, such as flowers, vases, cushion colors, and rugs, as sometimes aligning the artwork with the accessories creates a beautiful visual dynamic in the room.

Placement of the Artwork:

The safest and most common way to place artwork is in the center with symmetry, but consider the overall space when deciding on the location. The size of the wall, both length and width, will determine the dimensions of the artwork you should hang. It’s essential to make sure that the wall is wider than the artwork to allow “breathing” space for the painting. A small painting on a large wall may look “choked” and unsuitable, while a large painting on a smaller wall may “disappear” even if it’s beautiful. Consider the height of the painting relative to nearby furniture. Usually, the hanging height should be such that when you stand in front of it, the viewer’s eye level is at the center of the painting. If there’s a sofa, furniture, or a lamp nearby, consider it when determining the height of the painting. If the wall is empty and there are no nearby furniture pieces, you can generally hang the painting at any height you prefer.

Artwork Size:

Size matters! Artwork has presence and affects the atmosphere in a space. The size of the artwork is significant, and its size does matter when it comes to visual impact. If the space is large, it’s recommended to choose a painting in a suitable size that won’t disappear within the room. You can consider combining two paintings or creating a wall collage. Pay attention to what you love about the size of the artwork and how it complements the room’s overall design and visual appeal.

Artwork Theme:

Regarding the artwork theme or composition, the most important thing is to choose a painting that you love and connect with. It can be an urban theme, figures, abstract, or something that portrays people or nature. What’s important at this stage is that the content of the artwork makes you feel good in your heart.

Artwork Colors:

Match the colors in the painting to the living room/bedroom/dining room/office or any other space. Take into account the colors of the walls, furniture, curtains, and even the flooring. It’s essential that one of the colors in the painting or print matches or complements the other colors in the space. This ensures a more harmonious visual appearance in the room.

Budget:

It’s crucial to determine your budget before starting to search for the perfect artwork for your space. Keep in mind that you can find original, high-quality, and stunning paintings at flexible prices.

Frame:

When choosing a frame, it’s essential to understand that it creates an aesthetic border for the artwork. The frame should emphasize and complement the painting, the colors, and the style. The common types of frames include ornate gold frames, wooden frames, metal frames, and minimalist frames.
